Is ChatGPT Recommending Your Competitors? How to Check

AI assistants are recommending competitors in your category right now. Here is the three-query framework to audit your AI visibility manually — and when to automate it.

Is ChatGPT Recommending Your Competitors? How to Check

There is a conversation happening about your industry right now inside ChatGPT, and you are probably not invited. When a potential buyer asks an AI assistant for recommendations in your category, the AI synthesizes an answer based on the data it has. If your brand is not optimized for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), the AI will simply recommend your competitors.

Worse, because these are "zero-click" searches, you will never see this lost traffic in your Google Analytics dashboard. You are losing market share silently. Here is how to find out exactly what AI models are saying about your business—and your competitors.

The Problem with Manual Prompting

The most common way business owners try to check their AI visibility is by opening ChatGPT and typing, "What are the best [industry] companies in [city]?"

This is a good start, but it is deeply flawed.

First, AI models are personalized. If you ask ChatGPT about your own industry, your previous chat history and browsing habits may influence the response. Second, the AI landscape is fragmented. Our research shows that only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity [1].

If you only check ChatGPT, you are completely blind to what Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity are telling your buyers. To get a true picture of your AI visibility, you need to test multiple prompts across multiple engines, using clean, un-personalized sessions.

The 3 Questions You Must Ask

If you want to manually audit your AI visibility, you must test these three types of queries across at least three different AI engines:

  1. The Category Query: "What are the top 5 providers of [your service] for [your target audience]?" This tests your general brand authority.
  2. The Comparison Query: "Compare [Competitor A] and [Competitor B]. Are there any better alternatives?" This tests if AI views you as a viable challenger brand.
  3. The Direct Brand Query: "What are the pros and cons of using [Your Brand Name]?" This tests what reputation data the AI has ingested about you.

If your competitors show up in the first two queries and you do not, you have a severe GEO problem. If the AI hallucinates incorrect pricing or features in the third query, you have a technical data problem (likely missing an llms.txt file or Schema markup).

Why Are Your Competitors Winning?

If a competitor is being cited while you are ignored, it usually comes down to three factors:

  • Extractable Data: Their website is structured with clear, definitive answers that AI can easily parse, while your site relies on vague marketing copy.
  • Third-Party Consensus: They have a stronger presence on YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, and review platforms. AI models trust cross-channel consensus over self-promotion.
  • Technical Accessibility: Your server or robots.txt file is accidentally blocking AI crawlers from reading your site.

Automate the Audit

Manually prompting four different AI engines every week is tedious and prone to bias. You need a systematic way to track your visibility and identify exactly why your competitors are winning the citations.

Skip the manual prompting. Our free tool runs the checks for you. Run a snapshot to see your baseline visibility score across the major AI engines in seconds.
